Abstract
Introduction: Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) infections are uncommon (0.3-1.7%) (1) but devastating complications. Most cases are caused by Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (2). In rare instances, orthopaedic surgeons encounter atypical germs such as mycobacteria. Case description: We report the case of a patient suffering from THA infection by Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MT) following primary THA for idiopathic arthritis. The patient was initially treated with DAIR in another institution for a Staphylococcus aureus infection and was later referred to our institution because of persistent symptoms. Diagnosis: The diagnosis of MT infection was made thanks to microbiological cultures and 16s RNA PCR on joint fluid aspirated pre-operatively and later confirmed by cultures and histology of per-operative samples. Treatment: The patient was treated by a two-stage revision and a 9 months course of anti-tuberculous chemotherapy. Follow-up: The patient has now been followed for three years and is disease-free.
