Abstract
The authors use an equivalence between the /b q/-state Potts model on a /b d/-dimensional lattice for /b q/=2/sup n/, /b n /=1, 2, ... and a spin 1/2 Ising model on /b n/ copies of the lattice with 2 /b n/-spin ferromagnetic interactions to obtain some exact new results for both systems. In particular they prove the existence of first-order phase transitions for a class of ferromagnetic Ising systems obtained as perturbations of the large /b q/ Potts-Ising system and the non-vanishing of the surface tension for the Potts model (with /b q/=2/sup n/) at all temperatures below their transition temperature.
