Abstract
Nuclei close to the proton and neutron drip lines become accessible to experimental study through the use of radioactive beams. The role of radioactive beam facilities, in particular in the low energy regime, in the fields of nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics is discussed. First results are presented and further experimental work that is already feasible is pointed out.
