Abstract
The heat produced during an isometric tetanus is compared to the heat calculated from the chemical reactions which have occurred. The former is higher than the latter, indicating that unidentified reactions are occurring. These reactions are probably neither oxidative non glycolytic. It is suggested that there is a chemical reservoir of energy, besides that of the phos-phocreatine-ATP system, which may be drawn upon during contraction. Its capacity is high, amounting to at least 1OO ncal/g.
