- The paper addresses one of the key matters of Urbanism, Nature. Whether adopted as a tool or a solution, or confined as an independent reserve of biodiversity, Nature becomes an object opposed to the artificial that amplifies the boundary between human and nonhuman. However, this objectification that makes it a “solution” does not seem sufficient to address the ecological crisis. Moving from an exploration of how Nature has been defined and employed in the project, the paper proposes a relational approach, focusing on coexistence rather than separation, and defining an infrastructure of intermediation. The case to which this research refers is the Mediterranean coast, shaped by the mutual action of anthropogenic and natural agents, whose condition is now exacerbated by the climate crisis. To address these intertwined agencies, the paper proposes the concept of “Postnatural” as a cognitive framework for questioning the capability to understand the complexity of the traditional tools of Urbanism, based on the division between Nature and Culture. Within this framework it explores the feasibility of an infrastructure of intermediation between these agencies, suggesting possible different tools that, crossing history, space and perception, can include other agencies and transform the urban project into a Postnatural project.
