Abstract
The volume distribution curve, obtained from Coulter counters by spherical reference particles with an assumed Gaussian diameter distribution, is positively skewed. The mode of this distribution corresponds to the stated mean diameter. The standard half-count calibration process points to the median and not to the mode. Therefore, two other techniques of calibration are proposed and evaluated repeatedly with a monodisperse polystyrene latex suspension and in parallel with the half-count method. They are respectively based on a finite difference scheme and on an optimization strategy. Their performances are not particularly affected by the broadening of the true volume distribution curve, due to the agglutination of the particles and to the poor shape pulses generation.
