Abstract
The straightforward method for calibrating the efficiency ( gamma ) of an ion detector is to observe the counting rate (N) produced by a beam of known intensity (i). Then gamma =Nq/i. But there is an upper limit to the counting rate of a detector (typically 10/sup 5 / counts/sec) and the corresponding current intensity of the order of 10/sup -15/ A is not easy to measure precisely. It is therefore valuable to have a means of attenuating the intensity of the ion beam in a reliable way. In the method reported here, that attenuation is achieved by sweeping the ion beam, fast and repeatedly, across a narrow slit located in front of the detector. The sweep time T across the slit is smaller than the response time of the detector, so that only one pulse can be produced during one sweep.
