This thesis investigated the extent to which tooth wear (TW) affects adults, assessed the knowledge of dentists about this condition, the knowledge acquired by dental students using a novel teaching model, and the clinical performance of restorations used in the treatment of severe TW. Cross-sectional Studies I&II (n=570 adults) showed high prevalence of TW (75%), but limited severity and impact on OHRQoL. Study III, a practice-based study, included 104 dentists who answered a novel case presentation survey. They performed reasonably well in applying current concepts for TW diagnosis and risk assessment (ᴋ=0.55-0.54) while the agreement for treatment decision was fair (ᴋ=0.35). The inverted classroom combined with case presentation model in Study IV showed that students in the test group (n=29) performed markedly better (LMM; OR=0.62; p=0.006) than those in the control group (n=30). The 2-3-year RCT in Study V (n=15 patients) showed that indirect PICN restorations (n=85) had a significantly inferior survival rate to direct resin composite restorations (n=88; p<0.001). Awareness among dentists/dental students about TW was enhanced and treatment/monitoring modalities were developed.
