Abstract
This paper focuses on the fictive frame and considers it beyond its usual characterization as a device of Flemish origin by examining its meanings and functions in Piero di Cosimo’s painting. It demonstrates the active role the frame plays in articulating the interplay of corporeal and spiritual gazes, a question embodied by Mary Magdalen as a Biblical figure and otherwise raised by Piero di Cosimo’s work. By drawing attention to the device’s occurrences and its modi operandi in both the late 15th century Virgin and Child paintings and Florentine female portraiture, this paper highlights its efficacy in articulating the Magdalen’s intermediary status as a sinner turned saint, both relatable and ideal, familiar in her weakness and inaccessible in her exemplarity.
