Abstract
(en) [Oral health and risk behaviors of children and adolescents in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo] The present study aimed to determine the dental health of children attending dental clinics in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, to determine their treatment needs, and to identify factors related with the observed dental pathologies. A total of 710 children (369 females, 341 males) aged 1 to 17 years, seeking dental care in dental clinics from April 2007 to January 2008 were interviewed about their medical problems, eating habits, oral hygiene and received a clinical exam. The mean age was 9.3 years (SD = 3.6). The prevalence of dental decay was 79.1%, dmft index for children aged 4 to 6 years was 3.23 (SD = 2.73), while DMFT was 1.80 (SD = 1.71) for those aged 11 to 13 years. For temporary teeth, on average 2.6 extractions and 1.3 teeth feelings were indicated while 1.6 extractions and 2.3 teeth feelings were necessary for permanent teeth. Munching was reported by 73.2% of children mostly with sweet foods (64.8%). 73.5% reported brushing teeth once a day and in the morning only (74.9%). The prevalence of dental decay is extremely high among dental health care seekers and the 0 index tends to be higher. The needs for treatment in children are tremendous and insufficient tooth brushing seems to be the principal underlying cause. Tooth brushing need to be promoted.
