Abstract
Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage technologies have a role to play among the solutions to the major climate problems. Using membranes in the separation processes on which these technologies are based can be of interest, since they have a remarkable separation capacity combined with a relatively low energy demand. Ion-exchange membranes (IEMs), which allow the preferential passage of certain ions, are used for the recovery of adsorbents or absorbents used in CO2 capture, or for the conversion of CO2 into high-value chemical species. This chapter provides a general description of IEMs and the techniques to which they generally belong.
