Abstract
Conducting polymers (CP) are the most recent generation of polymers, exhibiting the electrical and optical properties of metals or semiconductors and the attractive mechanical properties and processing advantages of polymers. CP nanostructures attract more and more attention due to their potential technological applications but also to their fundamental interest in that the properties of a material can change in this regime of transition between bulk and molecular scales. Template synthesis, entailing the synthesis of a material within the porosity of a host material, is an elegant approach to the production of CP nanostructures. The use of track-etched membranes as templates confers specific morphologies, electrical and mechanical properties to the CP nanostructures obtained. On the basis of the existing technology of heavy ion irradiation and track-etching of polymer films, thin nanoporous supported films have been produced and used for the synthesis of CP and metals nanostructures. Nanotubes of polypyrrole (PPy) and polyaniline (Pani) have been electrosynthesized in various track-etched templates and characterized. The transport behaviors of PPy films and nanotubes have been studied and compared. The doping levels, electronic structures, charge carrier proportions, electrochemical behaviors of PPy and Pani nanotubes have been determined. All these parameters give a new light on the specificities of CP nanotubes and on the understanding of their electrical behavior.
