Abstract
Healthcare providers who take care of young patients with cancer (leukaemia) in the context of a specialised hospital unit dedicated to the follow-up of adolescents and young adults show a great commitment toward supporting the developmental and individuation processes that are inherent to adolescence. Their constant attention to the patient-as-a-person makes them personally and emotionally involved, which leads to a redefinition of their professional roles and a shift in their professional identity. This can be seen as a positive process, though a challenging one. Indeed it is characterized by more symmetry, which implies to set new patterns of professional distance. Our results hereafter are based on a qualitative study, which involved observations and in-depth interviews with the members of a multidisciplinary healthcare team. The data collected was analysed inductively, using the grounded theory approach.
