- Sibling relationships. Postmodern psychoanalytic perspectives on progressive "horizontality" in human relationships. -The article begins with a description of the metapsychology of sibling relationships and their family roots from the point of view of Freud and his successors. The question of how "fraternity" can develop from sibling relationships leads to a discussion of identification processes in hierarchically and horizontally organized groups. The "disappearance" of the paternal function in present-day society and the symbolic law-giving function it once represented is associated with a new and progressive "horizontality" in social relationships. Against the background of Freud's ideas on cultural development the author discusses the extent to which recent developments in contemporary psychoanalysis reflect this general tendency toward horizontality.
