- Far from being an exclusive endeavor, late medieval governments were shaped by dialogues from above, within, and below. This paper examines how knowledge of urban politics circulated among the socially diverse populations of late medieval cities in the Low Countries. What types of instructions on good governance circulated within these cities? What was the content of these instructions, and in what diverse forms did they exist? Addressing these questions, the paper reveals that the education of urban governors was not the domain of a select few but a shared societal experience, reflecting a truly polyphonic world of learning.
