- It is known that classifications have an impact on practices. The objective of this article is then to analyse how mental health classifications, that have two particularities (interactive character and uncertainty), affect the daily practices of mental health caregivers. This literature review therefore reports the importance of negotiation processes in the mental health evaluation, in regard to these classifications. I argue that the forms of negotiation taking place between patients and practitioners and between practitioners themselves concern these classifications and their consequences. In fact, the organisation of the practice is in accordance with these categories’ particularities. Finally, this article suggests that these negotiation processes make visible the tension between the formalism of categories and the impossibility of standardization in mental healthcare.
