Abstract
(en) This article offers a critical assessment of the contribution, for Indology, of the mythological works of Georges Dumézil centered on his comparative theory of the Indo-European “three functions” (which Nick Allen, as a follower, enriched by broadening the perspective). It first emphasizes the importance of his theological exegesis of the Sanskrit epics (Mahābhārata), the relevance of which does not directly rest on an interpretation through the prism of the tripartite ideology. The survival of some clearly trifunctional motifs in the ancient Indian, epic and purāṇic, mytho-heroic traditions is then studied, with, in conclusion, the question of the historical value that can be attributed to them.
