- (en) This dissertation begins in the muddy camps of Calais during the so-called “refugee crisis,” when 10,000 people living on the site of the former landfill were evicted in October 2016. This moment, which resonated across Europe, revealed the stark tension between European humanist discourses and the racialized violence experienced by those labeled as “migrants” at the borders. Through an anthropology of postcolonial, ecological, and neoliberal “disaster,” the research then follows migratory routes along the French-Italian border: from the Col de l’Échelle to the ski resorts of Serre-Chevalier and Montgenèvre. These mountains, crossed daily by men and women from the Global South fleeing conditions in Italy to seek refuge in other European countries, are also inhabited by local volunteers and activists who open shelters and squats, circumventing the constraints of European directives. Across the chapters, the thesis traces the entanglements of local memories, everyday migratory struggles, the rise of far-right populism, the repression of anarchist movements, and the violence inflicted on the environment by neoliberal tourism and speculation. Through a dense ethnography of space and everyday life, this research brings forth a cacophony of voices, showing the emergence of historical processes and fragments of intertwined struggles.
