- (en) The research on absenteeism among students in non-compulsory higher education is essentially based on à postériori interviews and questionnaires. We have tried to objectivize the perception that lecturers from the Master’s degree in Educational Sciences had of a noticeable increase in absenteeism during the last few years. This phenomenon is all the more questionable as our type of teaching is intended for adults with a professional status, who are therefore expected to be motivated. For this research we developed an original analysis framework derived from organizational analyses of absenteeism at work and we compiled a list of self-declared attendances at class, guaranteeing anonymity. For the two years of the Master’s degree, in 2010-2011, we had an overall absenteeism rate of 22%, whereas the absenteeism rates by subject vary from 5% to 32%. This research also confirms the influence of certain external organizational variables on the rate of absenteeism such as the size of groups, the year of study or the course thematic. The internal organizational course-related variables such as teaching methods or form of assessment do not seem to be determinant in this study.
