Abstract
The energy transition will require massive investments in flexible electricity generation to cope with the integration of intermittent renewable electricity sources. These investments are supported by short-term electricity markets, and this thesis provides practical solutions to specific market design issues related to short-run electricity pricing in the context of the integration of European balancing electricity markets and the introduction of scarcity pricing through an operating reserve demand curve. The three issues addressed in this thesis are: (1) the parametrization of the operating reserve demand curve based on a short-term system operation simulator for Belgium, (2) the implementation of scarcity pricing in an integrated European balancing market, and (3) the discrepancies between electricity prices caused by the multiplicity of balancing energy products.
