- Abstract
- In the "principia", newton clearly distinguishes between the principle of inertia (the first law), inertial mass and inertial force. according to newton, the inertial force enjoys the same degree of reality as external forces. the inertial force must thus have a real cause, or a source, which is absolute space. it is also shown that the introduction of absolute space is not illegitimate from the point of view of the methodological principles that newton himself accepted.
