(en) Soleus muscles tetanically stimulated in vitro at 20° C were released at various controlled velocities. The myosin heavy chains were separated by SDS-glycerol polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and quantified by densitometry. Soleus muscle has two myosin heavy chains (MHC1 and MHC2A) in various proportions, strongly (r = -0.499, P < 0.001, n = 89) correlated with b (Hill velocity constant). The mean proportion in MHC1 depends on mouse strain: it decreases in the order: KY, NMRI, MDX and C57. The force constant a/Fo is equal to 0.11±0.02: it does not depend on the proportions of myosin heavy chains.
