Abstract
The importance of the gastrointestinal tract is increasingly recognized among intensivists ; owing to the advances that were made in acute resuscitation, more and more patients are now surviving from their acute aggression, and subsequently develop protracted and sometime lethal complications including sepsis and denutrition. Since previous studies suggested that these complications may be partly relate to impaired gastrointestinal function (clearance of bacteria, propulsion of nutrients), we undertook clinical studies on gut motor function in critically ill patients.
