This article demonstrates that the devotional portrait diptychs were not a popular type of religious image as it is often stated, but rather a special type of painting which were circulated in very specific ways, from the duke of Burgundy to the middle classes via the nobility. The ways in which devotional diptychs were used and known attest to their capacity to express social ambition and prestige of the person portrayed.
