Abstract
Rootzén and Zholud (2017) carry out an exceptionally careful analysis of the data recorded in the International Database on Longevity (IDL). As the authors illustrate, a naive approach, ignoring the intricacies of the sampling scheme, could easily lead to erroneous conclusions. They find that the data on supercentenarians do not contradict the hypothesis that at the highest ages, the force of mortality is constant.
