Abstract
(en) [Frequency, causes and consequences of hypoglycemia in the elderly patients with diabetes] Hypoglycemia is common in elderly patients living with type 2 diabetes. The risk factors are the same as in younger patients, but geriatric complications also occur. Symptoms can change over time and take on a misleading mask in older subjects. The immediate and longer-term consequences are serious, although the role of hypoglycemia is sometimes difficult to ascertain. Hypoglycemia testifies to the vulnerability of the patient. Therapeutic management requires the rapid administration of sugar. Prevention is essential and is based in particular on the adaptation of glycemic objectives according to the degree of frailty of the patient and the use of low-risk hypoglycemia treatments.
