Abstract
Human rights have played a central role in the La Via Campesina’s struggle against the appropriation of land and resources. This article explores, in a first part, the advantages and limitations of the human rights framework and the reasons that prompted activists from La Via Campesina to formulate their claims in terms of rights. It then discusses a number of tensions that underlie the claim/recognition of land rights, through institutional channels ("from above"), before exploring other strategies ("from below"), that have been deployed by the movement, and which focus more on the defense and control of lands and territories.
