This article presents a synchronic description of the French complex discourse marker "ou sinon" based on a corpus analysis of text messages gathered in French-speaking Belgium. The study shows that "ou sinon" is semantically restricted to the values of digression and negative hypothesis of the simple conjunction sinon by a process of fixation and grammaticalization. Added to the semantic (loss of transparency) and syntactic (position) criteria, a typographical analysis was conducted and confirmed, through the presence of demotivated spellings ('aussi non', 'au sinon'), the advanced state of grammaticalization of the complex marker. Finally, a quantitative analysis comparing the Belgian corpus to its French counterpart revealed the regional character of the digressive value, as yet only borne by the simple conjunction in France.
