Today’s world of work is changing rapidly, among others because of a combined set of macro trends related to digitalization, globalization, demographic change and climate change. To thrive in this highly competitive business environment, organizations are looking to support employee performance through skills development. To do this, they invest heavily in talent management systems, including personal development plan as a key component. With this research project, we are progressively building and testing an innovative conceptual model that places self-directed learning (SDL) at the heart of personal development plan (PDP) practice. Through the four studies included in the research, we are checking if SDL indeed supports the undertaking of leaning activities in the workplace and job performance; and how SDL within PDP practice can be supported through managerial practices. These studies complement each other from a methodological perspective, by embracing a mixed methods research approach, and by collecting data from different organizational sectors.
