- To what extent does the activity of perspective-taking rely on skills that are trainable and/or susceptible to mastery? To make headway in answering this question, we first examine the concepts of “perspective-taking” used in different psychological sciences, with a critical focus on those that reduce it to the imaginative simulation of another’s mental state. By addressing recurring issues in simulative accounts, we are able to identify five skills that are mobilized in “getting closer to another’s point of view”, as well as a form of attention than cannot be adequately captured by the language of skills. The article closes with some short remarks on the implications of this approach for educational practices.
