Abstract
Discrete-simulation models have become popular tools to aid healthcare decision-makers in improving the hospital performance since they are able to show the studied process as a whole, identify bottlenecks and evaluate changes in the execution the process. In this paper, a simulation model developed with Package ARENA10.0 is developed to investigate two strategies for constructing the surgery plan for the operating theatre in CHU Ambroise Paré, a Belgian hospital: the first one assigns blocks of open duration to specific surgeons and the second one construct a surgery plan for specialties where the surgeon can plan his cases into any available blocks of time assigned to his specialty. The developed simulation model was tested with the data of ambulatory cases extracted from a one-year observation period. According to the experimental results, the surgery plan based on the second strategy can achieve a more fluent daily patient flow (fewer patients were delayed to the overtime period; less waiting time was needed in service sectors).
