Abstract
This thesis studies topics in International Trade and Labour Outcomes (Part I) and International Trade and Organisation of Firms (Part II). Part I provides novel empirical evidence on how global fragmentation of production (offshoring) leads to cross-skill and within-skill inter-generational and cross-skill intra-generational inequalities (Chapter 1) and how it determines the employment terms and conditions of workers with different age-skill profiles through its impact on their demand elasticities (Chapter 2). It documents that the shares of younger more-skilled workers in total wage bill tend to increase with offshoring, while those of the older low-skilled tend to decrease. In addition, the documented increase in the demand elasticities of younger low-skilled and more-skilled workers with offshoring implies a deterioration in their employment terms and conditions because of this activity. Part II provides novel empirical evidence on trade within Multinational Corporations (intra-firm trade). The documented scarcity of foreign affiliates with intra-firm trade in Chapter 3 implies that firm boundaries mainly exist for the transfer of intangibles, rather than of tangible goods. The same chapter reports that the existence (extensive margin) and share (intensive margin) of a foreign affiliate's intra-firm trade are positively associated with its size and productivity level. The two margins of intra-firm trade are also positively associated with knowledge transfer from the parent company (Chapter 4).
