Abstract
The subject of our research in Science Education is the development of a methodology for characterizing the structure of representations of students about the scientific concepts of ecology. We focus on determining the cognitive structure of scientific knowledge and the exploration of its possible transformation caused by acquired information during a basic ecology at the university level. The exploratory study proposes a innovative methodology, that combines the concept mapping tool and analysis methods of common representations from social psychology, to reflect, at best, the structure and content of the representation of scientific concepts in ecology. Thereby, this research is accomplished through an empirical approach that includes three stages: the development of a method of analysis for a common representation, the graphical modeling of the structure of the representation and the identification of changes occurred throughout the course. These research makes crucial contributions : a) it develops a unique methodology that complements the theoretical and methodological frameworks of two disciplines : didactic of sciences and social psychology , offering an alternative to the analysis of representations, b) it helps also to expand analysis possibilities of concept maps by providing new tools to approach their content and structure, as well as opening opportunities for longitudinal studies and c) it contributes to our understanding of learning ecology. Indeed we describe students's representations in a clear and simple way which allows as well the recognition of the knowledge “already there” than changes over time, that can be a tool in the teaching and learning process of ecology.
