Abstract
(en) Saint Augustine, in De catechizandis rudibus, develops a catechetical pedagogy grounded in charity, humility, and adaptation to the realities of catechumens, while emphasizing joy as a sign of the Spirit. The author offers a critical reinterpretation of this work for Africa, highlighting its potential to address contemporary challenges: the instrumentalization of faith, sterile intellectualization, and religious syncretism. Despite its limitations (anthropological dualism, an anxiety-inducing eschatology), Augustine’s text provides key insights for a transformative catechesis centered on the kerygma and mercy, while engaging with local cultures. The author identifies five pathways for renewal: refocusing catechesis on the essential (the Good News), prioritizing affectivity, discerning motivations, adapting methods to contexts, and using catechesis as a tool for social transformation. The challenge lies in reconciling fidelity to tradition with pastoral creativity, fostering a faith that is both rooted and engaged.
