One of the main drawbacks of Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) is the limited material palette currently available. The production of parts using high-strength 7xxx aluminium alloys with the L-PBF technology is not yet well controlled and therefore not yet available for the aerospace industry. Therefore, deepening the understanding of its microstructure and mechanical behaviour is the first overarching goal to reach for this new alloy. In this study, ZrH2 addition to Al7075 powder allows obtaining nearly fully dense parts (99.9%) without hot cracking. Afterwards, an optimised heat treatment is applied to this alloy to enhance its mechanical performances and reach a yield strength of 515 MPa by controlled precipitation. These nano-hardening precipitates were successfully identified using TEM. Furthermore, micro-tensile test coupled with μ-DIC and nano-indentation allow to assess the influence of building orientation as well as local microstructural features on this alloy’s mechanical behaviour and damage mechanisms.
