Abstract
I was asked to reflect upon the first theme of the workshop “Various forms of rationality and relations to uncertainty” and to have a closer look at the latter part of that theme, i.e. the relations to uncertainty. Reading Julie-Anne Boudreau’s presentation of that theme, I distinguish three topics: the failure of Western sciences and city planning to address uncertainty and spontaneity; the new challenge of taking action without the basis of a secure knowledge; the way Western rationality stems from a philosophy of the social contract and developed from there onwards. On this last topic, my own work and research will be of no use but they can throw some light on the first two topics. Let’s start with planning.
