Abstract
The focus of this dissertation concerns the transformations of the social bond at work and the future of solidarity and collective action in a working environment characterised by individualisation. The key hypothesis is that social bond, solidarity and collective consciousness in the working world are not disappearing, but that the forms and temporalities of the social bond at work look more like the logic of a network, organised around projects, rather than the logic of the community, which is at the core of the trade-union institution. To understand the transformations of the social bond within the working world, we mobilised three key concepts: the concepts of network, project and subject. The network metaphor reflects the current structuring of collectives; the project is the element about which a collective or a mobilisation is organised; while the subject refers to the individual as an actor, who has the will to modify its environment rather than to be determined by it. In this dissertation, we analyse these transformations of the social bond within the working world in professional environments that are particularly concerned with the process of individualisation: the activities fields related to information and communication technologies. The proposed round in this working environment is illustrative of the new industrial world and the relation to work of younger generations of employees. It shows a very strong individualisation of the working conditions and the relation to work. It also shows a permanent need to cooperate and a concern for personal development that remain a collective project, but of a different nature, even if considered apart from traditional collective plans and mechanisms. The new image of the worker is characterised neither by egoism, nor by aloneness, but by a collective feeling, which does not match the traditional ways of thinking solidarity within the working world. We apply to the working world, some analytical frameworks derived from the analysis of the current social movements and the nature of civic engagement. These analytical frameworks did not show a disappearance of civic engagement but a change in its nature. These analyses appear relevant to understand the changes of the social bond within the working world. To conclude the analysis of a network solidarity, we propose a typology, which distinguishes three models of relation between individuals and collectives at work: the community model, the society model and the network model. In the latter, solidarity becomes a shaped value which cannot be thought independently of the individuals that it gathers. They are different individuals, who define their relation to the other and to work in a much more personalised way. This model of relating to the collective and structuring of the social bond can bring a renewed reading of the transformations of solidarity and social bond at work. This reading can help us to see "bond" where someone only see "social emptiness".
