(de) [Child sport eligibility] Sudden death in the young is rare, and about 25% of the cases occur during exercise and sports. Most young people with sudden cardiac death exhibit underlying heart disease. Cardiovascular screening must include a focused personal and family history, with special emphasis made on exertional chest pain, syncope, or early sudden death within the family, in addition to examining blood pressure, murmurs, and Marfan’s syndrome stigmata. If any abnormalities are found, additional studies are initiated in order to systematically exclude known causes of sudden death. In addition to the careful clinical evaluation required prior to signing a sport eligibility/disqualification document, it is the treating physician’s responsibility to inform the patient and her/his family about the potential benefits and harms pertaining to cardiovascular preparticipation screening.
