Abstract
The sim Rhodomyrtus tomentosa plant is a shrub of the Myrtaceae family, originating from South–East Asia and has been recently classified as one of 240 “Neglected and Underutilised Crop Species” of Vietnam, China, Thailand and Cambodia. The sim fruit has been used to treat diarrhoea, dysentery and to boost the immune system in the traditional medicine of China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand for a long time. Little information about the chemical composition of this fruit is available and its pharmaceutical properties therefore are still not understood. This study provides for the first time data about the nutritional composition and phenolic profile of the sim fruit. These data partly elucidate the uses of this fruit in folk medicine and indicate that the sim fruit is a new and promising source of health-promoting compounds including dietary fibres and phenolic compounds. By means of HPLC/DAD/HR-MS, 19 phenolic compounds were identified and quantified in the sim fruit. Piceatannol, a stilbene having potent biological activities, was the major phenolic compound in the fruit with a concentration 1000 to 2000 times higher than in red grapes, a major source of piceatannol in the human diet. In the fruit, stilbenes and ellagitannins predominated in the seeds, while most of the anthocyanins and flavonols were in the skin. Most of piceatannol (94.20%) was recovered in the seeds, which are presently discarded as a by-product of the production of sim juice or sim wine. The conditions of piceatannol extraction from sim seed were optimised using response surface methodology, and can be used as a first step for the production of piceatannol-rich products to be used as nutraceuticals.
