Abstract
There is a vast body of knowledge regarding to the transition to higher education. Yet, it is still difficult to draw a precise picture of student’s adjustment process to the university. This presentation aims to provide a more in-depth understanding of this issue by presenting a Belgian research project. In this project, complementary methods (qualitative design, path analysis, multilevel analysis, person centred analysis, experimental design…) were carried out in order to investigate the importance of (1) the temporal nature of the academic year, (2) student’s entrance patterns and (3) context-specificity in our understanding of the first year experience. The practical implications of the results and the role of diversity for the transition to higher education will also be discussed.
