Abstract
(en) This doctoral study in psychology and education sciences addresses the issue of young street boys’ self – representation in Lubumbashi. It aims at the understanding of psychological mechanisms in these young people faced with numerous sufferings. From the interaction of self-representation and social representation result reactions likely to be considered as conformist, deviant or ambivalent. We have proposed to call “resilience” this process which allows them to give meaning to their sufferings. How do street young boys define themselves? Which social representation do they enjoy? How do they react to this social representation? These have been the major concerns of this study. Thanks to semi structured interviews triangulated with direct and participant observation, our qualitative approach has allowed us to meet not only street boys, but also some adult witnesses and some girls who enjoy institutional care. The cross-sectional analysis of all the data and the longitudinal analysis of three cases contrasted among them and with that of one of the girls above mentioned have led to results which help to understand the phenomenon. The boys addressed have precociously acquired psychic autonomy. They wanted independence, but not all of them have the same investment of their material autonomy. The results reveal a resilience in individual cases, not only because every young person is unique, but also particular in his way of acting and of reacting. At the same age or at different ages, the overt behaviors are not identical. All prove to be resilient, but they are not at the same time and in the same way. Hence the importance of inter individual differences. The cases being significant in themselves, there are invariants that can be considered fairly typical of this population.
