- (en) [Potentially inappropriate medication use in elderly care in Burkina Faso] Introduction : Chronic diseases and age-related multimorbidity are emerging problems in sub-Saharan Africa. Management of these conditions is associated with inappropriate use of medications. However, the reasons for this inappropriate use in health care facilities have not been sufficiently elucidated to propose corrective actions. Methods : We carried out a qualitative study from August to December 2014 in Bobo-Dioulasso health care facilities. We conducted individual interviews with health care providers and a focus group with older adults. A semi-structured questionnaire for care providers based on a chronic care model was used to explore the reasons for inappropriate use of medications. Results : We identified the mains factors that can help to explain the reasons for inappropriate use of medications : prescription-focused care, poor communication between patients and providers and between providers, poor care provider skills, lack of medical leadership, and paternalism of care providers. Discussion : These results suggest approaches to encourage the development of care provider skills, standardized practices and rational prescription to help improve medication use in the elderly.
