- In May 2014 Belgium experienced an uncommon vertical simultaneity of the regional, federal and European elections. Multilevel electoral candidacies have been banned forcing a choice between regional and federal lists. These elections were thus a conundrum to achieve an equilibrium between candidates’ offer and selectorates’ demand. Mixing the Belgian Candidate Survey and biographical data about regional and federal MPs, our models test five hypotheses to explain regional and federal candidates’ dissatisfaction with their list. Our findings stress that candidates’ attitudes (preferences in terms of regional autonomy) and candidates’ attributes (experience at another level of government) significantly impact candidates’ dissatisfaction.
