Abstract
The chapter looks into metaphors aimed at enlightening people about the nature of intergenerational relations and the possible normative implications of their characteristics. The chapter presents and discusses classical metaphors including generations as relay race runners, generations as populations of mayflies, and generations as bound together through a chain relationship. The chapter then discusses the mountain hut metaphor, stressing three types of rules applicable to successive user spaces and their respective properties. Finally, it draws on the Jeffersonian project of comparing generations with nations, exploring the meaning and implications of looking at generations as “period-locked”, comparing them with “land-locked nations”.
