- The ‘historical turn’ in modern philosophy is commonly associated with Hegel and contrasted with Kant’s alleged lack of interest in the historical development of philosophy. Challenging this prevailing narrative, this collection of essays shifts the focus to a largely neglected debate on the historiography of philosophy that emerged in the wake of Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason. Its eleven essays address the diverging ways in which a range of German philosophers, including lesser-known figures such as Fülleborn, Reinhold, Tennemann, and Maimon, reflected on the intricate relation of philosophy to its past, the extent to which developments in the history of philosophy can be captured by a priori means, and the methods to be employed by historians of philosophy. Examining contributions by Kant, Eberhard and Platner, the early post-Kantians, Schelling and Hegel, the collection aims to show that Kant’s contemporaries played a key role in the emergence and consolidation of the historiography of philosophy as a philosophical discipline, and thus, gave shape to a crucial period in the history of modern philosophy.
