- Abstract
- The availability of various means of life support obliges doctors to ponder on which treatment and care patients suffering from incurable diseases should receive; they have to consider whether or not to resort to life- prolonging measures. The article defines the concept of cessation of treatment distinguishing it from the rejection of care, from therapeutic abandon and from euthanasia. It recalls the ethics on which the decision to give up the idea of life-prolonging treatment are founded. It considers the difficulties which the doctor could be confronted with when undecided as to the favourable effects of a particular therapy, when patients are incapable of expressing themselves or when they hesitate or do not abide by their doctors' orders. © Fondation Nationale de Gérontologie,.
