Abstract
In Arabic and Arab-Latin alchemical texts (ninth to thirteenth centuries), the recipe is ever-present. This literary form, which can be seen as a series of information presented with the aim of reproducing a process, even if this is not always the intention of the authors, has been surprisingly little studied in a synthetic way. In this article, I offer different possible definitions of the alchemical recipe, and identify its main characteristics. I also propose four classifications that can serve as working tools to better understand and classify alchemical recipes: according to the stated purpose, according to the mode of expression, according to the author’s expertise and according to the degree of reproducibility.
