- In order to provide a more comprehensive account of the development of the historiography of philosophy in post-Kantian idealism, this article attempts to analyze the discussion between Reinhold and Hegel around 1801. In my view, this dispute represents a key episode in the constitution of the history of philosophy as a prominent topic of debate in the German intellectual landscape. My plan is as follows: I first reconstruct the context of the emergence of the Hegel-Reinhold dispute over the history and historicity of philosophy and address what I consider to be a gap in the literature concerning the metaphilosophical dimension of this controversy. Second, I turn to the first two volumes of Reinhold´s Beiträge in order to present the main elements of his realist conception of philosophy and the resulting methodological perspective on the history of philosophy . Finally, I turn to Hegel´s Differenzschrift in order to examine his metaphilosophical approach and the way in which he conceives the unfolding of philosophical positions in terms of the development of oppositions and antinomies.
