- (en) This study examines the notion of « sacred power », sacra potestas in Latin, evoked by the Independent Commission on Abuse in the Church (CIASE) on the basis of a statement by the French bishops in their Letter to Catholics on the fight against paedophilia of 25 March 2021. What about this power whose adjective « sacred » has become problematic? After a brief elucidation of the status of the sacred in the Christian thought, this power will first be considered as a power to perform sacramental acts (potestas ordinis), to then discover that Vatican II goes beyond this empowerment : the unitary concept of sacra potestas (LG 10b, 18a and 27a) will lead us to the tria munera conferred in episcopal ordination (LG 21b) which the canonical mission liberates or authorizes (NEP 2). This will involve recalling the retroacts of this unitary concept in the binomial of order and jurisdiction to come to the 1983 Code with regard to the government of the Church. At the end of this journey, a return to the CIASE Report will allow a better understanding of the fact that ecclesial governance does not rest exclusively on « sacred power ». Nevertheless, the vigilance of those entitled to it is required for the service of the people of God.
