Abstract
The formation of cracks during the production of plates and cylinders of glassy carbon is investigated and the crack propagation mechanism discussed. It is found that the crack surface contains two kinds of regions and that cracks start from a point inside a glassy carbon plate and propagate slowly in the inner region by thermal stress. The existence of crater-like cavities in the inner smooth surface of a crack is described.
